Flaherty, Ramsay Swell Lawrence Staff,
Belic Makes Change To Slotback Position

By DOUG DOUGHTY

With spring practice a mere
three days old, the football
program is active with the
addition of two new assistants
plus several position changes.

Joining coach Don
Lawrence's staff are Mike
Flaherty, of late an aide at
Indiana State, and Casto
Ramsay, long time head man at
Emory & Henry and most
recently a coach at Abingdon
High School in state.

Flaherty is presently slated
to work with the receivers
and Ramsay with the defensive
backs. Flaherty served as an
assistant for Cincinnati before
he moved to Indiana State and
was an influence on All-American
quarterback Greg Cook while
the latter was in his playing days
at U. of C.

Ramsey can be considered
the bigger "name" of the two
choices. Cited by head defensive
coach Joe Mark for his
"considerable experience",
Ramsay served as head coach at
Emory & Henry for some time
and later worked as an assistant
for both the University of
Houston and Virginia Tech.
Abingdon High has only offered
him a respite from the anxieties
of big time coaching.

Possibly the most interesting
news coming out of spring
practice has been the switching
of linebacker Chuck Belie to
slotback in a new formation,
while tight end Ed Sabornie is
being moved to linebacker. Dick
Ambrose, last year's top ground
gainer for the Cavayearlings, has
been practicing as a defensive
tackle.

Belie, hoping to score points
rather than prevent them for a
change, doesn't feel too bad
about the move. "It's not bad
but it requires a lot more
running." No stranger to a
backfield spot, Belie was an ace
fullback in high-school and even
moved into a vacant
quarterback position his senior
year.

Acknowledged for his good
speed and willingness to hit.
Sabornie should provide quite
an asset for the linebacking
crew. A forgotten man on last
fall's team. Sabornie only
caught three passes for 27 yards
all season. Optimistic about the
change. Sabornie said, "It came
as a surprise but I liked it."

For all the fans who can
recover fast from Friday night's
revelry, there will be an open
scrimmage Saturday morning at
10:00 at Scott Stadium.
Although scheduling has
provided problems, the team
ordinarily has practices each
Monday, Friday and Saturday.
